If any of these sound familiar

These are recognition statements, not a diagnosis. If three or more land, the assessment is worth running.

  • You wait for your partner to start. When they finally do, something in you flinches.
  • On paper everything is fine — and that somehow makes it worse.
  • You used to want intimacy. You don't anymore — and you're not sure if it's them, you, or just life.
  • Stress, fatigue, or unresolved tension shuts the whole system down.
  • Some part of you believes you're broken for how your desire works.
  • You wonder whether the difference between you and your partner is a problem or just a pattern.

What is a desire type?

A desire type is the pattern your sexual interest tends to follow. Research distinguishes spontaneous desire (interest that arises on its own) from responsive desire (interest that arises once intimacy has already begun) and notes the role of brakes — stress, body image, conflict, fatigue, history — that quietly shape both. This is widely discussed in non-clinical literature. It is not a diagnosis, it is not a disorder, and it is not in the DSM-5.

Where it startsBegins before anything happens.Begins after something has already started.
Sense of initiationOften wants to start.Often wants to continue.
Time horizonFamiliar in early relationships.More common in long-term relationships.
Reading of the gapEasy to mistake for higher 'drive'.Easy to mistake for low interest.
What it needsLess context to fire.Enough context to fire — and that is normal.

What the assessment measures

Twenty-four educational items grounded in two widely discussed frameworks: the Sexual Desire Inventory (a structured measure of dyadic and solitary interest) and the Dual Control Model (which describes accelerators and brakes). Adapted for plain-language self-reflection. Not a clinical instrument.

Spontaneous desire
Interest that shows up on its own — before context, before intimacy has started.
Responsive desire
Interest that shows up once something has already begun — a kind of warm-up, not a defect.
Brakes and accelerators
The inputs — stress, body, partner, history — that quietly decide whether either system fires.

What the questions look like

Two representative items and a redacted snippet from a sample profile. The assessment reads like a psychology intake, not a tabloid quiz.

Representative items

  • How often do you find yourself wanting intimacy only after closeness has already started? (Never, Sometimes, Often, Very often)
  • When you are stressed about work or money, your interest in intimacy disappears. (Strongly disagree, Disagree, Neutral, Agree, Strongly agree)

Sample profile snippet

Type: The Responsive (Moderate). Strongest brakes: unresolved tension, fatigue. Strongest accelerators: long, slow closeness. First reflection: a five-minute prompt for the next time you assume you are 'just not interested' before context has had a chance to start.

What this is not

Naming the boundary up front, because it sharpens what the product actually does.

  • Not therapy. We are not a substitute for a licensed clinician or a medical provider.
  • Not a diagnosis. There is no disorder named here. This is a pattern, not a condition.
  • Not arousal content. There is no nudity, no erotica, no role-play, and no explicit imagery anywhere in the product.
  • Not a way to fix your partner. We do not coach persuasion, win-back scripts, or pressure tactics.
  • Not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger to yourself or others, please use the resources in the safety strip below.

The reflection path

The assessment and your first reflection are free. The 28-day program, the session library, and the private AI coach are paid. Pricing is shown after your profile, so it lands in context.

Pricing is shown after the assessment, not before.

Private by default. Adults only.

We address shame with structure: no social features, no email gate before the assessment, and crisis resources one tap away on every screen.

  • Adults 18+. No nudity, no role-play, no explicit content anywhere in the product.
  • No account needed to start the assessment. Free-text answers are excluded from analytics.
  • Crisis resources available at every step (988 in the US, Samaritans in the UK, RAINN for sexual assault).
  • Not a substitute for therapy, medical care, or crisis support.

Common questions

Is this therapy?
No. Desire Type Coach is an educational self-help tool. It is not therapy, not a medical device, not a diagnostic service, and not a crisis line. If you need clinical care, please seek a licensed professional.
Is there nudity or explicit content?
No. The product is non-explicit by design. No nudity, no erotica, no role-play, and no imagery of bodies or sex acts. Items and copy read like a psychology intake, not a tabloid quiz.
What is responsive desire?
Responsive desire is interest that shows up once intimacy has already begun rather than appearing on its own beforehand. It is well-described in non-clinical literature (often associated with the work of Rosemary Basson) and is common, especially in long-term relationships. It is not a disorder.
What is the Dual Control Model?
A framework — developed by researchers at the Kinsey Institute — that describes sexual response as the balance between excitation (accelerators) and inhibition (brakes). Both systems exist in everyone; the balance varies between people and across contexts. The assessment uses plain-language items adapted from this framework.
How is this different from a telehealth or prescription app?
Telehealth apps prescribe medication for specific medical conditions through a licensed clinician. Desire Type Coach does not prescribe, treat, or diagnose anything. It is an educational self-assessment with a reflection program and a guarded AI coach — that is the entire scope.
Will my data be sold?
No. We do not sell your data. We do not run third-party advertising trackers on assessment or result pages. You can export or delete your data at any time. See our Privacy page for details, including how special-category data is handled under GDPR.
Is this safe if I am in recovery from sexual trauma?
The assessment is educational and uses neutral language, but it does ask about your sexual life. We include a one-question crisis screen at the start; if you answer yes, we pause and show resources before continuing. If you are working with a therapist, sharing your result with them is welcome. If you are in immediate crisis, please use the resources listed in our Safety section.
Do you verify age?
The product is for adults 18+. v1 uses self-attestation at the start of the assessment. A provider-based age verification step is on the roadmap for jurisdictions where it is required.
Is the AI coach a therapist?
No. The AI coach is a guarded reflection tool with hard limits: no role-play, no explicit content, no diagnoses, no medication advice, no instructions about whether to leave or stay in a relationship. It is a reflection prompt with memory, not a therapist.
How much does it cost?
The assessment and your first reflection are free. The full program is a subscription — pricing is shown after your profile so it lands in context, with a seven-day refund window and one-click cancellation.

Map your desire type. Read your own system. Stop scoring yourself against a template that isn't yours.
